Not quite sure…

A headline caught my interest: “A Miss America contestant performed a science experiment on stage as her talent and the crowd went wild.” I had to watch…

The video is taken during the Miss America 2016 preliminary round and has Miss Vermont performing the Elephant’s Toothpaste — coincidentally mentioned in letter to the editor, left. I don’t want to be critical of someone attempting to bring science into the limelight but I have mixed feelings. First, I am glad that chemistry is getting some recognition. Also, Miss Vermont did explain the chemistry behind the demonstration so it was not solely entertainment. My concern was over the preparation, cleanup and safety for this messy and exothermic reaction. At least goggles were worn and Miss Vermont did state “do not try this at home.” I do question her statement: “Science, it does not have to be abstract or confusing, but in fact, it can be quite fun and useful.” There is something about this statement that rubs me the wrong way. Let me know what you think. Or better yet, show the demo to your class and let them weigh in.
