Fall 2023 Knowledge Integration (KI)

Integration (Integ) courses are open to all students, level 2A+

Courses are as follows:

  • INTEG 210: Making Collaboration Work
  • INTEG 220: Nature of Scientific Knowledge
  • INTEG 251: Creative Thinking.

Each of these courses are open to all students at UW, level 2A+. Could you please let your students know about these courses?

INTEG 210 is designed to teach students how to work in diverse teams and helps them develop key skills that are in high demand by employers. The course was very positively received by the students when it was taught in 2018 and 2019. The Arts students in particular noted how much they appreciated the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary teams (we had students from all six Faculties) and how helpful the course was in preparing them for co-op interviews and for other courses that require group work.

INTEG 220 focuses on how scientific knowledge comes to be created from various disciplines, and their scientific reasoning. The course is a favourite amongst students who wish to untangle how different ways of knowing impact progress in science, and hear from guest speakers speak first-hand about their work in epistemology. Arts students may be particularly interested in this course by considering how scientists’ social identities and philosophical views influence their research.

INTEG 251 is a creative thinking course that incorporates different forms of hands-on activities to develop an understanding and practice of creative thinking. This course will appeal to Arts students who want to build their creativity and critical skills while seeing the impactful effects creative thinking can have on shaping institutions, practices and other ways we express ourselves collectively.

Fall 2023 Political Science (PSCI) 390 Special Studies

This course examines the political, legal, and public policy consequences of contemporary free speech challenges. Students will learn about the role of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and human rights tribunals, current government policy initiatives, populism, and the effect 'free speech debates' are having on political culture and polarization in society.

Topics include: hate speech, misinformation & disinformation, pornography & obscenity, protest, campus speech, deplatforming, defamation, the regulation of social media, and speech during elections.

The course will feature in-person class lectures (Wednesdays 12:30pm-2:20pm) and online tutorial sessions.
