Working With Radiation – Open Sources (SO2030-O)

Purpose

This online training module outlines the basic principles of working safely with open source radioactive material.

Who should take this course?

This module is for individuals with radioactive open sources (e.g., vials). If you do not know what type of radiation you are working with, contact your supervisor prior to starting this course.

By the end of this training module, you should be able to:

  • Contrast the three different types of radiation
  • Understand the effects of radiation exposure
  • Identify types of contamination
  • Evaluate radiation contamination
  • Know how to respond in case of emergency
  • Understand your responsibilities as per the Radiation Safety Program

Additional required training

Radiation safety training has the following three elements:

  • Completion of the online Working With Radiation - Open Source module.
  • Basic practical radiation safety training from the Safety Office. 
  • Laboratory specific practical radiation safety training provided by the principal investigator.
